Out of print - what and why?

We have various releases which have gone out of print and we thought that our blog might be a good place to address what this means; how it happens and why.

A particular version of a release may go out of print for one of two reasons. The first and most simple is that a release goes out print because it is superseded by another release. This is especially true if special packaging is involved such as a SteelBook or Slipbox. Along this theme another reason might be in the case of an upgrade where an older DVD becomes redundant due to a new restoration, packaging or new special edition. This is the case with some of our releases including the first DVD of The House by the Cemetery (later re-issued from a new HD restoration), SteelBooks of Battle Royale and Zombie Flesh-Eaters as well as various Slipbox editions (all still available in the usual Arrow Video packages).

The second reason refers to licensing issues. Films are most commonly licensed by distributors from producers for a limited time. Usually it is common for these licenses to be easily renewed but sometimes there are complications and this is not possible (see our releases of Dawn of the Dead, Martin and Savage Streets, all sadly OOP). We do everything we can to keep films in print and should they be lost we will endeavour for them to become part of the Arrow Video series again in the future.

Unfortunately we cannot advise how long anything will remain in print but we can say that all limited editions are truly limited and we will not print more of a limited edition to service demand. We understand that for our limited editions to remain special they must truly be limited so if there is a limited edition you want but don't have yet we would advise not waiting too long!

Just how limited any set is depends from one release to another. Our SteelBooks tend to be limited to 4000 copies, our other limited editions have either had their numbers printed such as the two sets of Battle Royale (Blu-ray, 10,000 and DVD 5,000) whereas others such as Demons 1 and 2 Slipboxes are not numbered but are even more limited at just 2,000 copies. The best place to see if a title is out of print is to check on our website, which will list as many of our releases as possible, even out of print titles, which will be listed but no longer available for sale. Our ‘out of print’ section includes titles that are no longer commercially available through stores such as Amazon or HMV so whilst they are still available from us they should be considered on the critical list!

We hope this post was informative but if you have any questions not answered here, let us know in the comments!

    2. Region Free does not always entail it will work in your DVD player. Theres 'Region Free NTSC' and 'Region Free PAL' Im assuming Arrow's discs, being they are UK based, are 'Region Free PAL' which means it wont work in a US/Canadian/Japanese NTSC DVD player regardless of the 'region free' title.

    3. PAL or NTSC do not apply for Bluray. You only need to worry about the region. Not sure if Arrow is region free. I don't believe it is though.
